Proverbs 30 The Sayings of Agur

The Sayings of Agur

1 The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh contain this message. I am weary, O God; I am weary and worn out, O God.

2 I am too stupid to be human, and I lack common sense.

3 I have not mastered human wisdom, nor do I know the Holy One.

4 Who but God goes up to heaven and comes back down? Who holds the wind in his fists? Who wraps up the oceans in his cloak? Who has created the whole wide world? What is his name—and his son’s name? Tell me if you know!

5 Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.

6 Do not add to his words, or he may rebuke you and expose you as a liar.

7 O God, I beg two favors from you; let me have them before I die.

8 First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.

9 For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name.

I can already admire Agur's honesty in these verses. He knows himself well enough to know that he would be at risk if he was rich or poor. Limitations on the things of this world are something each Christian need. For example, I limit myself on secular music, because I understand it's influence on my mindset. I limit myself on movies with sexual content because I want to keep my purity for my future husband, and doors are the first step to losing that. You know yourself better than anybody on Earth, and God knows you better than yourself. Ask yourself and God what standards you need to set for yourself so you never open doors like that.

10 Never slander a worker to the employer, or the person will curse you, and you will pay for it.

11 Some people curse their father and do not thank their mother.

12 They are pure in their own eyes, but they are filthy and unwashed.

There are kids in schools who go to school without realizing that they have body odor. Let's be honest. I was one of those kids for the longest time. You don't realize that you stink, and when people insult you because you do stink you shove it aside and call them bullies. But in the end when you finally realize that you have body odor, you're flustered, embarrassed, and you go take a shower. Isn't that what happens when you realize that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and that we're wasting that sacrifice by the sins we commit? There's a moment when you fully realize the truth and the severity of what you're doing, and it's sudden and deep. You get embarrassed and flustered over how dumb you were after all these years. And in the end what do we do? We go and wash ourselves.

13 They look proudly around, casting disdainful glances.

14 They have teeth like swords and fangs like knives. They devour the poor from the earth and the needy from among humanity.

15 The leech has two suckers that cry out, “More, more!” There are three things that are never satisfied— no, four that never say, “Enough!”:

16 the grave, the barren womb, the thirsty desert, the blazing fire.

I'm going to put aside the barren womb for now, but all four of these things strangely enough have something in common. There will never be an end to death on Earth. People will continue to die of old age, illness, and or in car wrecks. The desert will always be dry no matter how much rain pours down on it. A blazing fire will continue to consume everything flammable in it's path. However, what circumstances have we seen some these things at a halt? Jesus rose from the grave, Sarah in her old age bore a son, Moses saw a burning bush that didn't turn to ashes. I won't speak for the desert yet, maybe that's next. But while these things will never say that they have enough, God seems to bend those rules for the sake of the Kingdom.

17 The eye that mocks a father and despises a mother’s instructions will be plucked out by ravens of the valley and eaten by vultures.

18 There are three things that amaze me— no, four things that I don’t understand:

19 how an eagle glides through the sky, how a snake slithers on a rock, how a ship navigates the ocean, how a man loves a woman.

Now while you can learn how an eagle soars in the sky and how a snake slithers on a rock with an Animal Planet documentary, there are things that nobody will ever understand. For example off the top of my head, I don't understand how so much information can be stored into a little strand of DNA, and make me the unique person I am today. I don't understand how a computer can hold so much data, and be transferred onto pictures on a monitor in high definition. I don't understand how a DVD player reads a DVD. And I don't want to know, so please don't answer in the comments. While these things are completely unknown to me, they still amaze me, and in a way it shows just how wondrous and mysterious God is. Now yes people make computers and DVD players so it doesn't give glory to God, but it still makes the world seem a lot more magical than people make it out to be.

20 An adulterous woman consumes a man, then wipes her mouth and says, “What’s wrong with that?”

21 There are three things that make the earth tremble— no, four it cannot endure:

22 a slave who becomes a king, an overbearing fool who prospers,

23 a bitter woman who finally gets a husband, a servant girl who supplants her mistress.

There are many things that we think have shocked the world. For example, slavery, homosexual marriage, satanic cults, ISIS, and the list continues. Don't you find it interesting that out of all the things we have been shocked over, none of those things have been on the list? That's because all of the things on our list that we're shocked over, are all things that have been accomplished without God. However, all of the things on this list are things that can be accomplished by God. If you're stunned by the stories of King David, then think about how stunned the world would be if David was nothing more than a slave. We were stunned about Esther becoming a queen, but how much more stunned would we have been if she was a male becoming a king? If David and Esther only got as far as they did with the help of God, what makes you think that just anybody can do it without him?

24 There are four things on earth that are small but unusually wise:

25 Ants—they aren’t strong, but they store up food all summer.

26 Hyraxes—they aren’t powerful, but they make their homes among the rocks.

27 Locusts—they have no king, but they march in formation.

28 Lizards—they are easy to catch, but they are found even in kings’ palaces.

We put a lot of stock in capabilities, especially when we're going out and serving the Lord. When we go out on a missions trip, don't we worry about whether or not we're worthy enough or have enough wisdom to show people Jesus? When we go to school and we think about sitting with that kid who's all alone, don't we focus on what if we aren't strong enough to handle the bullying? Well, if ants can store food despite their size, and locusts can fly in formation without a leader, why do you have little faith that God can give you the strength and wisdom to go do what he calls us to do?

29 There are three things that walk with stately stride—no, four that strut about:

30 the lion, king of animals, who won’t turn aside for anything,

31 the strutting rooster, the male goat, a king as he leads his army.

32 If you have been a fool by being proud or plotting evil, cover your mouth in shame.

33 As the beating of cream yields butter and striking the nose causes bleeding, so stirring up anger causes quarrels.

Ah, Proverbs, perhaps one of my favorite books in the Bible, so many things that I can relate with. :)
